Friday is Book Club night and I couldn’t be more excited! Yes, I am 32 and in a book club. It is amazing and I feel extremely lucky to have met so many wonderful moms through the group. If you aren’t in one, I suggest starting one for your favorite gal pals. I always enjoy the books we read, but the company is even better!
This month our book is The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen. Honestly one of the best psychological thrillers I have read in a long time! Just when I thought I had something figured out, they would through you another curve ball. Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down. You will be hooked!
Once I finished The Wife Between Us I wanted a bit of a lighter read. As much as I love a good thriller, I like to switch up genres. I decided to read Confessions of a Domestic Failure by Bunmi Laditan.
If you are a newer mom, with kids under the age of 5, you will get a chuckle out of this one. I was laughing out loud multiple times. It is basically about a new mom trying to figure out this crazy journey they call motherhood. Ashley Keller, the main character, left her job to become a stay-at-home mom and feels like she is failing in every way. It is written in a journal like format documenting her days trying to be the perfect mom, even though there is no such thing. In the insta-crazy, pinterest perfect world we live in, it’s so hard to feel like you are doing a good enough job. It is a raw, and hilarious novel about finding your own grove as a mom.
Reading this book got me thinking about how all moms are a “domestic failure” in their own way. There are things that we avoid or are just not good at. So I decided to make a list of my top 10 domestic failures:
- Putting Away Laundry-My bedroom has at least 2 full baskets that need to be put away on any given day.
- The Toy Room-I used to clean it everyday and couldn’t understand people that didn’t. Now that my toddler can spend 5 minutes playing and undo an hour of cleaning, I don’t even bother.
- Seasonal decoration-I go all out for Christmas, but the other holidays are very minimal.
- Unloading the dishwasher-It doesn’t take long, but I avoid it as long as possible.
- Ironing-This is something I simply don’t do. Thankfully we have dry cleaner close.
- Messy Crafts-I will occasionally set up a sand sensory tub or let my daughter finger paint, but it’s not my favorite. I like clean, structured activities.
- Hanging Flower Baskets-I buy them every year and they never survive until fall.
- Cooking a Big Breakfast-Fruit, yogurt, cereal, granola bars, or anything else I can throw together fast is our daily routine.
- Patio Cushions-I always forget to put away before it rains. They are a stained mess and cleaning them is worse then putting a duvet cover on! Why don’t they make them waterproof????
- My Closet-It is always a disaster and I don’t even care!
So if you are feeling like you haven’t mastered this whole motherhood thing yet, welcome to the club! There’s no way to be perfect, but many ways to be great 🙂
